Blanket yarn calculator

Estimate blanket yarn in grams, meters, yards and whole skeins from a measured swatch.

01 / START WITH YOUR SWATCH

How much yarn will I need?

A blanket estimate grounded in
your yarn, your stitch, your tension.

Your project details

1 Your blanket

Measure the body only. Plan a separately worked border on its own.

2 Your measured swatch

Use the same yarn, hook and stitch as your blanket.

3 From your yarn label

An adjustable planning cushion, separate from the base estimate.

NO MYSTERY NUMBERS

A small sample.
A clearer picture.

A swatch is a small sample made using the yarn, hook and stitch you’ll use for the blanket. Measure and weigh it after preparing it the same way you intend to prepare your finished project.

  1. Scale the area

Divide blanket area by swatch area. A 100 × 120 cm blanket is 120 times the area of a 10 × 10 cm swatch.

  2. Estimate the yarn

Multiply that ratio by swatch weight. A 5 g swatch gives a 600 g base estimate. Your yarn label converts this to meters.

  3. Give yourself room

Add your chosen allowance and round up to whole skeins. With 10% extra and 100 g skeins, that example needs 7 skeins.
