How many granny squares do you need for a blanket?

Choose a granny-square blanket grid from your measured squares, joining width and border, with a 48-square layout and worked size examples.

The number of granny squares is the number across multiplied by the number down. To choose those counts, measure a finished sample square and account for joins and the outer border. There is no single square count for a throw: 48 small squares and 48 large squares make very different blankets.

Picture a simple six-by-eight layout

A grid of six squares across and eight down uses 48 squares. The diagram shows one original color-placement idea: alternate moss and clay motifs against cream. It represents 24 motifs of each color treatment; it does not mean each yarn contributes half the blanket’s weight.

Try sketching your own grid before making a pile of motifs. You can change the color order while keeping the same count. For a gift, start with a combination the recipient would enjoy; the color inspiration page gives three starting palettes.

Measure the square you will actually join

Make your sample using the chosen pattern, hook and yarn. Include every round that belongs to an individual square before assembly. Prepare it as appropriate for the yarn and your intended finished project, then measure the width and height without stretching it to reach a preferred number.

Add the joining width only where it belongs

For a regular grid, estimated finished width is:

columns × square width + (columns − 1) × join width + 2 × border width

Use the equivalent calculation for height with rows and square height. There are five internal joins across six squares, not six. Here, “join width” means the net extra span the join adds between the measured squares. It is not the visual thickness of a raised seam.

Join two samples with the intended method and measure the combined span. Subtract the two separate square widths to estimate the net change. A seam may add almost no span, while an added joining band can add more. If the assembly pulls the squares in or stretches them, use the measured assembled dimensions to revise the plan. Lion Brand’s invisible-seam tutorial illustrates one assembly method; it does not supply a universal join-width allowance.

A 48-square example, with room for finishing

Suppose each square measures 15 × 15 cm, each internal join adds 1 cm of span, and the outer border adds 5 cm on every side. Six columns give 6 × 15 + 5 × 1 + 10 = 105 cm. Eight rows give 8 × 15 + 7 × 1 + 10 = 137 cm. The estimated finished blanket is 105 × 137 cm, approximately 41.3 × 53.9 inches.

All three examples use 15 cm squares and a 5 cm border on each side. They are arithmetic examples, not tested blanket dimensions.

Choose nearby whole counts for your target size

With nonnegative added join span, divide (target width − twice border width + join width) by (square width + join width) to find a suggested column count. For a 110 cm target with the measurements above, (110 − 10 + 1) ÷ 16 = 6.3125. Six columns finish at 105 cm; seven finish at 121 cm. Choose according to the coverage you need, and repeat for height.

If even one square plus the border exceeds your target, change the motif size or border plan. Do not try to crochet a fraction of a finished square to make the arithmetic fit.

Separate square count from yarn quantity

A layout tells you how many motifs to make, not how much yarn to buy. Measure yarn used by representative squares, track colors separately, and reserve yarn for joins and the outer border. A shared cream outer round may need more yarn than the colored centers even when there are equal numbers of moss and clay motifs.
